Hinds'
Feet on High Places ,
Hannah Hurnard (1977, Tyndale House Publishers, Wheaton, Illinois)
“The voice of my Beloved! behold, he cometh leaping upon the mountains,
skipping upon the hills.” (Song 2:8)
In Hinds Feet on High Places, we find a strange affinity with the crippled,
fearful girl who answers the Shepherd’s call to follow Him through
the wilderness to the High Places.
This is one of the most captivating and meaningful allegories you’ll
find to the Christian life.
Hinds'
Feet on High Places ,
is a children's version of one of our favorite allegories.
Mountains of Spices , Hannah Hurnard (1977, Tyndale House
Publishers, Wheaton, Illinois)
In this sequal to Hinds Feet on High Places, Much-Afraid, now known by
her new and more appropriate name, returns to the valley and the village
of Much-Trembling. There she witnesses the power of the Shepherd to save
her family of fearings, no matter what their personal difficulties or
other hurdles.
The
Pursuit of God: The Human Thirst for the Divine ,
A.W. Tozer (1982, Christian Publications, Camp Hill, Pennsylvania)
If your life goal, like mine and like Dr. Tozer’s, is to follow
hard after God and apprehend Him so that you may behold the beauty of
His glory, this book will help you meet it.
Always well-said, Tozer’s advice comes from the deep personal experience
drawn from his own pursuit to fill his life with the beauty of the Lord
and taste deeply of His fountain. God's
Pursuit of Man ,
A.W. Tozer (1982, Christian Publications, Camp Hill, Pennsylvania)
We must understand, as badly as we want to find the satisfaction of a
personal relationship with God, that He has twice the desire to find that
personal relationship with us. It is the reason He made us, and fills
Him with as much joy as it fills us. A very inspiring work.
The
Knowledge of the Holy: The Attributes of God: Their Meaning in the Christian
Life ,
A.W. Tozer (1961, Harper Collins, New York, New York)
It was while reading this book that my heart first lept within me with
the realization that God was supposed to be most important. Indeed, not
only is this the law of the land, but it is the only really fulfilling
way to live.
One of my absolute favorites, this is a book to devour slowly and ponder
much. Although it cannot say it all (for the human mind cannot grasp it
all), it gives you a great wealth of knowledge about the Holy One, which
is understanding.
How
To Worship Jesus Christ ,
J.R. Carroll (1984, Moody Press, Chicago, Illinois)
The main message of this man’s life is that worshipping Jesus Christ
is our reasonable and most enjoyable service to God.
It is a relief to have in your hand a book that fully explains this truth,
and at the same time gives you practical answers to the practical questions
of how to go about it. Very highly recommended.
God
Is My Delight ,
W. Phillip Keller (1991, Kregal Publications, Grand Rapids, Michigan)
A spiritual autobiography of what God has meant to one of my favorite
authors, this book offers hope and inspiration for your spiritual life
as well. So many praises to God will swell your heart that you will not
be able to repress them as you read.
What
Is the Father Like?: A Devotional Look at How God Cares for His Children ,
W. Phillip Keller (1996, Bethany House Publishers, Minneapolis,
Minnesota)
I read this book through tears when doubting the truths I find plainly
in Scriptures that tell me what my Father is like.
In words that make the heart bleed with relief, this book explains tenderly
how God is toward us, and redefines that word we all know and want to
love so well, Father.
The Normal Christian Life , Watchman Nee (1957, Gospel
Literature Service, Bombay, India, 1973, Christian Literature Crusade,
Fort Washington, Pennsylvania)
Real victory in Christ is difficult to envision because we often do not
find good earthly models. This book does a wonderful job of explaining
in detail how the Christian life should look—normally.
Sometimes hard to digest immediately, this book is well worth the effort.
Take small bites and you will be blessed with the truths that mature Christians
learn here, or else learn the hard way.
Hudson Taylors Spiritual Secret , Geraldine Taylor
(1996, Whitaker House, New Kensington, Pennsylvania)
Few men have found the secret of drawing near unto God like Hudson Taylor.
That is what makes this book a treasure chest of truths illustrated in
a real-live person who struggles, surrenders, and embraces the life of
fulness in Christ.
Little Nuggets Series, Jerry Benjamin (1996, Jerry Benjamin,
Box 5, Racine, WI, 53401)
A well-written and convicting little series of booklets that each have
a very needed message, this collection is also inspiring.
• What is the Most Important Thing God Asks of Us?
• Who Has the Right to Rule?
• What Is God’s One Word to His Own People?
• Perhaps Today?
Desiring God: Meditations of a Christian Hedonist , John Piper (1986, Multnomah Press, Sisters,
Oregon)
Never before have I understood better that God did not make us to mope
and drag our feet through life, as when I read this book. It is a joy
to discover a God who blesses and values and encourages the human experience
of delight, joy, and desire. With powerful testimony from Scriptures,
this book shows how God not only made these things, He designed it that
the only way to experience them at the height of their glory, is when
we delight, enjoy, and desire Him above all else.
The Calvary Road , Roy Hession (1948, Christian Literature
Crusade, Fort Washington, Pennsylvania)
This book is convicting because it’s principles, which come straight
from Scripture, go directly agains the grain of our inborn human nature.
The pain of the truths in this book may endure for a night, but the everlasting
rewards of joy in following Christ’s footsteps are well worth the
trouble.
Palace Beautiful , Albert E. Sims (1992, Christian Light
Publications, Harrisonburg, Virginia)
A young man is appointed Keeper of the Castle, employed by the great King
who is going away on a journey. As time goes by, the Keeper finds that
entertaining the harmless little man was the biggest mistake of his life
and career. Painfully, he learns how he must go about getting rid of the
little devil, and repair the Castle to its former beauty, so that it will
be ready when the King should return. Palace Beautiful is the best allegory
we have found that explains (linked to Scripture verses) how we can find
victory in Christ by dying daily to the flesh.
A Tale of three Kings: A Study in Brokenness , Gene Edwards (1980, Tyndal House,
Wheaton, Illinois)
Every one of us has been wounded in some way, and most of us have felt
the truth that the wounds of a friend are much more bitter than those
of an enemy. Because this can be a hard thing to emerge from unscathed,
this book is a needed asset to every Christian’s library. It will
reveal to you that the greater enemy to your life and happiness, is the
enemy within, not the one who seems to be wreaking all the havage without.
How to Know God's Will , Charles W. Shepson (1998,
Christian Publications, Camp HIll, Pennsylvania)
A person who has completely surrendered to Christ will seek to hear His
voice in every decision, because they desire to do His will. This book
helps clear away the mist from our eyes, and shows us how we can tell
for sure that we are really hearing God’s voice.
I re-read it from time to time to help me evaluate how I’ve been
led and to remove the doubts that my leading has been of the Lord.
The Peacemaker: A Biblical Guide to Resolving Personal Conflict , Ken Sande (1991, Baker Books, Grand
Rapids, Michigan)
As much as we may love God in our hearts, the real true test comes when
we attempt to love men.
The only way to tell if you have real, true, Godly love for fellow man
is to see how you love your enemies.
Unfortunately for us today, many people can become our enemies fast as
the opportunity for offense becomes so much greater. For that reason,
it is important for you to get a copy of this book and read it, re-read
it, and share it with your friends and family. It reiterates and outlines
the biblical way to conquer controversy, and shows how you can love, forgive,
and make a restoration in any relationship.
